Editing is important. It’s important enough that you might want to consider having your writing edited by a third party. Editing your work on your own is necessary, but if you are submitting your work for print publishing, you should consider having an objective editor go through your work.
It’s been said that a lawyer who has himself for a client has a fool representing him. The same thing is true of someone who relies solely on themselves for editing. Why is this true?
Good editing is objective and comes at the project without pre-conceived ideas. When you edit your own work, you know very well what you meant to say. It’s an objective outsider who can actually understand what it is you said, not what you meant to say.
If the piece you’ve written is long (a manuscript or an ebook for example), you could well be sick and tired of the project. Taking...

Copywriting for the web is a complex process. The right words, used the right way, need to be put in the right place for maximum efficiency. Website copywriters are likely to tell you, if asked, that web copywriting is one part art and one part science. They mean that there is some creative license that they all use but that there are certain elements that must be in place for website writing to be efficient. Here are some elements that every bit of website should contain.
1. Tell customers the benefits of the product. People are on the Internet looking for things to fix their problems and fill their needs. Tell people clearly how your product will meet their needs in a way that no other products can.
2. Your website should look professional. Websites that look like...

One of the more common projects that companies take on is the creation of a brochure. Your brochure is going to, more than likely, cost quite a bit just to print. You aren’t going to have your company represented by a flimsy piece of paper, so you are probably going to go all out on the paper stock, printing, etc. Before you go too far into the cosmetic layout, including hiring a graphic designer and getting the right images, you need to think about the importance of having a copywriter to do this project right. Copywriters are the secret ingredient that turns brochures into a work of art that really speaks to your audience.
Brochures Are More than Eye Candy
Remember that you have a goal with your brochure. More than likely you are trying to keep your customers...

It’s all about the hook. That’s the reason why people keep reading or keep coming back for more. The headline might attract interest, but the first sentence draws in the reader and keeps them there for the duration. Many readers just skim until they find something of interest. Hooks help make the whole thing interesting. Each paragraph should begin with something that engages the attention, with the biggest hook being the first line.
Consider some great classics. Melville’s “Call me Ishmael”, Dickens’ “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, or Orwell’s “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen”. The novels here are easily recognizable by their first lines as Moby Dick, A Tale of Two Cities, and 1984, making the reader want to know more from the very first line. Curiosity is one of the best possible ways...

Know your audience. How many times has any writer heard that one? Copywriters sometimes face a unique challenge in that they write for a general audience that seems to have no real common attribute. Just about everyone has a computer, or a refrigerator, or a microwave. How does someone write to an audience so broad?
Know Where the Writing is Headed
The target audience is never “everybody”. Even the literal everybody is made up of individual people. There are things that every human being has in common, certainly, but everyone is unique. Specificity is the key when talking about the audience. The article or ad should be aimed at a specific type of someone. read more »

There’s two ways to look at landing pages. On one hand, you’re going to hear that landing pages should be tightly and solely focused on one offer and one offer only. On the other hand, there are individuals who think that while focus on one offer may be good, you should not pass up the opportunity to include access to pages in your site or to mention other offers you may have available.
Keep in mind, though, that if you are using pay-per-click links to pull potential customers into your offer, then keeping the landing page focused solely on that one offer is probably a better idea. If a visitor is focused and came through a specific link to get to you, presenting other offers may discourage or disappoint them.
How to Develop a Landing Page
Before you start the development process, ask yourself a few questions.
• What’s the offer?
• Who’s...

They are going to make their website so attractive and cutting edge that people are bound to start coming to their site in record numbers. So a lot of time, effort and money are thrown into the new website. They get it all running perfectly. It is published to the web and… no one knows or cares about the website, so traffic is very low.

When it comes time to put a very technical product on the market, you may be challenged with finding an approach that is fresh and makes the product understandable to people who are not familiar with it. This is a tough job that requires the skills of a technical copywriter. These professionals can present your product to the public with a fresh perspective and sharp writing skills that can persuade your target audience.
You Don’t Need an Expert
Many people think that when they are going to market a technical product or service, they must use an internal resource who is very familiar with it. Some companies even get their developers to write the sales copy. This is a big mistake. You need a writer who knows how to research your product and who is skilled at writing sales copy to get the job done right. Don’t try to force your technical...
